Abstract: This presentation will be part of the classroom day. This will be an introduction (with a stress on intuition, graphics and real data examples) to the basic ideas, and "essential folklore" of smoothing, i.e. nonparametric curve estimation. Some topics in smoothing that have been recently debated in a heated and rather public way will be reviewed, from several points of view. Some very new ideas, such as scale space theory, that have the potential to seriously impact the way statisticians think about smoothing will also be discussed.

KeyWords: nonparametric curve estimation, kernel smoothing
