Abstract: Individuals with disabilities are significantly underrepresented in the fields of mathematics, statistics, science, and engineering. There are many reasons for this, but, most significantly, the cause can be attributed to the failure of the educational system, at all levels, to understand and to adequately develop, the capacity of those who are disabled, to undertake science and science-related subjects. Ignorance and misconceptions about the impact of certain disabling conditions, failure to understand the relative ease and low cost of many accommodations, and a failure to capitalize on the increasing wealth and sophisticated capability of technology to minimize physical limitations have meant that many students who are disabled, from their earliest years in school, are actively discouraged from entering into careers that offer challenges and opportunities for personal growth. Several strategies, including mentoring and recruitment, that can lead to optimizing opportunities for disabled students will be presented.

Abstract: This talk will begin with a short discussion of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and what higher education institutions and instructors are required to do under the law. The talk will then address how instructors, their departments, and their universities can design introductory and other statistics courses to be more accessible to students with disabilities. Both technological and non-technological issues will be discussed. Instructional strategies to implement for students with various physical disabilities (e.g., visually impaired, hearing impaired, wheelchair user) as well as students with a variety of learning disabilities will be given.
