VDI Software Notes Revised 7/28/18 1. Overview. The Rice Univeristy VMWare software provides a suite of software products accessible from any on campus or off-caumps using VPN remote acccess software. The VM is a virtual machine, and currently has the following software installed: U:\ drive and C:\ drives Microsoft Excel: Enable Data Analysis Toolpak and Solver Notepad++ (disable auto-updating) Python R R-Studio PuTTY Matlab Palisades Decision Tools SAS Show file extensions 2. NOTE: As of 2018 the VDI is Win 10. 1. MAKE SURE you are on campus or have VPN installed and running. (see C:\data\windows7_64bit_hassle.txt) 2. Install VMWare client available at https://vdi-connect.rice.edu vice https://it-vconnect.rice.edu. Download the client, select the appropriatre version for your OS (Win, Mac, iOS, etc.). 3. Run setup Specify default server: it-vconnect.rice.edu Actual install begins. 4. Restart your system 5. Run VMWare Horizon Client, select the Statistics VDI and log on with your netID. You will then have access to your U:\ drive. Detailed instructions are available in https://kb.rice.edu/page.php?id=69597 6. In the case of Windows 8, the connection might fail. There are two other things you can try for off-campus access. 01. In the VMware Horizon Client, right-click the "Statistics VDI" icon and select "Microsoft RDP" and try connecting with those settings. -or- 02. Connect to the Rice VPN. Then go to https://vdi-connect.rice.edu vice https://it-vconnect.rice.edu. Click "VMware Horizon HTML Access." THIS WORKS as of 7/28/18. In order to directly access your U:\ drive from outside of Rice, you will need to ..... see http://it.rice.edu/Content.aspx?id=82 ... under VPN, you can map a network drive as follows: Drive: Whatever (try u:) Folder: \\samba.ad.rice.edu\dobelman Wait! That didn't work: try Drive: \\storage.ad.rice.edu\home\d\dobelman Click on the link for different credentials and enter in ADRICE\username 4. BE SURE TO LOGOFF THE VM!! Press the "Start" button in the lower right corner of the screen and click the logoff button. "X"-ing out of the VM windows will leave you logged in!
