January 13, 2014 Dear Stat 600 Students (n=11), Welcome to another semester and the Statistics Graduate Seminar. The registrar has put us in a convenient location: DH 1075 at 11:00 a.m. each Monday. We'll finish up before lunch. Our first meeting will be this coming Monday, January 13. I will lead the discussion for two meetings. The course syllabus will be maintained on Owlspace. There will also a mailing list for the class, which is part of Owlspace. For our second meeting on January 27, I would like to ask each of you to prepare a 3-5 minute powerpoint (or equivalent) presentation about yourself. Please include information such as your undergraduate education (what, where, and when), interesting work experiences, as well anything you would care to include about your own interests (not only in statistics, but perhaps hobbies, childhood, family etc). (Email me your .ppt or .pdf file, or bring it on a USB drive.) I will show an example from last year. We will not formally report on each colloquium presentation this semester, but we will briefly discuss what to look for. In April, we may also spend a small portion of the semester reviewing old "A" exam questions for statistics. For the remainder of the semester, we will focus on two rounds of individual presentations, one on the whiteboard/ blackboard (280 level) and one electronic lecture on material at the 310/431 level. Look forward to an enjoyable term. Yours, Dr. Scott
