I am interested in the study of the origin and early evolution of life, particularly in the analysis of microbial genomes for the understanding of the evolution and assembly of basic metabolic pathways and the main mechanisms participating
in this process (horizontal gene transfer, gene duplication, simple sequences).

Currently I am a tenured Assistant Professor at the College of Sciences (Facultad de Ciencias), National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in the Microbiology Laboratory directed by Dr. Antonio Lazcano. My main research field is the study of the origin and early evolution of life employing bioinformatics tools. Actually, I am a postdoctoral fellow, working with Dr. Janet Siefert, analyzing genomes of the gram-positive bacteria.

Educational work is also an important part of my academic life. Accordingly, one of my main objectives is teaching courses at all academic levels (B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph. D). I also intend to create new and innovative courses in molecular evolution and bioinformatics. Since increasing the number of students of the sciences in Mexico is a priority, the popularization of science constitutes another one of my central activities
