Panel Session Title: Greying of the Federal Statistical Workforce-Challenges and Opportunities

The federal statistical workforce is declining in size, as is the rest of the federal government. Concurrently the existing workforce is ``aging.'' The three participants in this session are the heads of the Census Bureau, the National Center for Health Statistics and the Energy Information Administration. Rather than give formal papers, they will have a series of questions provided to them before the session which they will each address. The session topics will include: what are the implications of this ``greying'' for data products--will we move to the electronic age more rapidly; how do we undertake continuous training with an essentially static workforce; how is the system innovating and adapting; what are the implications of having fewer people and less institutional knowledge to do things the way we have always done them. The session will focus on the ability of the system to adapt--although we are in a static period the system has produced phenomenal change in the way we disseminate information to our customers. How was this accomplished? The participants will also address future plans for adaptation.
