Computing for Statistics 421: Getting Started.

LAST UPDATE:  Tue 2 Feb 99.

  •  We will provide support through the web pages for computing with the following applications packages: SAS, Splus, and Matlab.
  • Any of these can be accessed from Owlnet.  You may also be able to use them on a departmental or personal computer.
  • The examples we show will be directly relevant to homework exercises.  You should be able to "ape" them to successfully complete your homework assignments.
  • I have successfully run Splus and SAS on long-eared using Xwin32 (obtainable from Mudd Hall) on my PC.
  • If you use Splus, I recommend the old version (so you can access a nice help window using the command help.start()).  This is invoked on long-eared by typing "/usr/site/splus-3.4/bin/Splus".

  • I have discovered several nice introductory web pages on SAS which you may find helpful.

Let me know if you find others or if any of these links go down dcox@stat.rice.edu

I hope to have links up to such Splus and Matlab tutorials very soon.  Let me know if you find any.
