Abstract: If you're like millions of Americans, whether you want to buy a toaster or a car, you turn to the pages of Consumer Reports. You may simply want to know what the best rated product is, or you may look for more detailed information on product attributes and how they relate to performance. And you trust in the guidance you find because you know Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, is a nonprofit, independent consumer information organization with a long history of unbiased and rigorous consumer product testing. In this presentation, we take a 'behind-the-scenes' glimpse of product testing at Consumers Union, and show the vital role statisticians play in crunching much more than just numbers.
