Abstract: This overview of statistical process control (SPC) is part of Classroom Day. It is intended for statisticians who work in business and industry as well as those who teach MBA students.

SPC is usually viewed as concentrating on control charts with (undue) emphasis on points outside of control limits. A broader, more useful, view is to consider it as the study of sources of variation. In this tutorial I will introduce the basic statistics tools of SPC and then show examples in which analysis is pointed at investigating and exploiting sources of variation. My experiences in teaching MBA students about statistics through SPC will be briefly mentioned.

Keywords: Statistical process control, investigating variation
