COTS 2002

General Information

The Conference of Texas Statisticians (COTS) is an annual conference held at various locations in Texas. The objective of the conference is to bring together Texas statisticians and give them an opportunity to conduct professional activities and socialize. The conference traditionally holds one or two technical sessions on Friday, followed by a banquet, a "new faculty" session Saturday morning, and a student session Saturday afternoon. Variations on this format, however, are not uncommon. This year, for example, instead of the student oral presentations (traditionally closed to non-students), we are having a Student Poster Session Friday afternoon, which will be open to all
conference participants.

COTS is typically cosponsored by local chapters of the American Statistical Association and departments of statistics. This year COTS is cosponsored by the Department of Statistics, Rice; Department of Biostatistics, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; University of Texas School of Public School; Houston Area Chapter of the American Statistical Association.

This year the theme of the conference is biostatistics. As of this writing we have speakers representing six institutions with topics including cancer research, microarrays, analysis of misclassified data, decision-making in health care management, and genetics. The talks in the new faculty session will not necessarily follow the theme of the conference.

Please encourage your students to participate in the Student Poster Session, for which an award will be given for best poster. All students, including those not participating in the poster session, are eligible for reduced conference costs. Attending the conference is a good opportunity for students, especially advanced graduate students, to meet faculty and industrial representatives around the state. This year the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association is sponsoring a careers program in conjunction with the conference. We plan to have recruiters or other representatives from industry, academia, and government to talk with our statistics graduate students about career opportunities. We plan to sponsor Career Program Tables as part of the Saturday conference session, where students and representatives can meet and engage in open discussion. Interested students, recruiters, and representatives should contact Mike Anderson for more information.
